 A Dog Sits Waiting

by Kathy Flood

A dog sits waiting

In the cold autumn sun

Too faithful to leave

Too frightened to run

He's been here for days now

 With nothing to do

But sit by the road,

Waiting for you.

He can't understand why

You left him that day.

He thought you and he

Were stopping to play.

He's sure you'll come back,

And that's why he stays.

How long will he suffer?

How many more days?

His legs have grown weak

His throat's parched and dry

He's sick now from hunger

and falls, with a sigh.

He lays down his head

and closes his eyes

I wish you could see how

A waiting dog dies.

A few years ago Flat Coated Retriever rescue noticed that they were getting called to ID many long haired (and some short haired) black dogs. It is the charge of Flat Coat Rescue to go to the various shelters and rescues throughout the country and identify which of these poor dogs were indeed truly Flat Coats, pull them from the shelter and then find them forever homes.

It was heartbreaking to all when we would go to see a dog and find that the dog was not a Flat Coat and have to leave the dog at the shelter, as our charge and finances only allowed us to pull Flat Coats.

Our national rescue coordinator knew that black dogs are the last to be adopted and often the first to be euthanized and thus this site was born.

Here you will find photos and contact information for many of those dogs that were left in the shelter. They are not Flat Coats, they are just wonderful, beautiful, sweet, loveable black dogs who desperately need homes. They need a second chance at a wonderful life with a family...

Please take your time, bookmark this page, check back often...you will find older dogs and puppies, and some in between but what they all have in common is that....

all of them are watiing for a person just like you !!!
